John Austin studied Fine Art at the University of Newcastle upon-Tyne, UK between 1964 and 1969.and education at Avery Hill College.
Arriving in Papua New Guinea at the end of 1975 he taught Art at a Hill School in Lae then Education at Madang Teachers College and Goroka campus of the University of Paua New Guinea
He migrated the Cairns Australia in 1987 where he till lives.
